The Commission Reaches Out to Girls, Women and Men

The Commission recently joined various institutions and organisations in commemorating this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD whose theme was “Time is Now! Rural and Urban Activists Transforming Women’s lives.”

In line with this year’s theme, the Commission organised outreach events and participated in a march-past which took place on 8th March, 2018 from the High Court to the Freedom Statue. The March Past was graced by the Vice President Mrs Inonge Wina.

To celebrate IWD a team from the Commission led by the Human Resource and Administration Manager Mr Portipher Phiri travelled to Moomba Secondary School in Chibombo District where they gave motivational talks to more than 450 girls from grade 8 to 12.

The team also donated a computer, printer as well as school requirements which included exercise books, pens and pencils on 7th March, 2018.

School Head teacher Mr Maxwell Nyirenda who was flanked by other teachers was elated and said that it was good to see the Commission at his school as the Commission was known for conducting elections but that this time the Commission was there for another noble cause.

He thanked the Commission for the motivational chat with the students and the donation of the school requirements, computer and printer saying it would go a long way in helping to meet the Information Technology needs of the school.

Meanwhile, Mr Phiri led another team to visit the Matero After-care Centre, a transit home for about 50 abused adults, disabled and some mentally-ill children on 6th March 2018.

Apart from giving words of encouragement, the team shared the word of God to the vulnerable men and women at the centre. The team also gave a donation of food stuffs and groceries to the institution.

Matero After-Care Centre Social Welfare Officer Ms Chisala Mofya expressed appreciation to the Commission for the visit and donation adding that the groceries and food stuffs would go a long way in supporting the women and men at the institution.

Ms Mofya informed the Commission that Matero After-Care Centre was being supported by the Ministry of Community Development and some well-wishers.

Speaking to the Monthly, Gender Focal Point Person Sylvia Bwalya said that activities of the international women’s week and day were an opportunity for the Commission to reach out to under-privileged women and girls and to inspire young women and girls to grow up into responsible adults.
