E-voting

The Commission has been undertaking feasibility studies on electronic voting (E-voting) in line with the ECZ 2016 to 2020 Strategic Plan.

The Commission undertook the first phase of feasibility studies on e-voting from 21st to 30th June 2017. The studies involved visits to selected nations which apply E-voting to their electoral processes.

The visits were carried out in two phases, the most recent and second phase being a visit to the Electoral Commission of Namibia in Windhoek Namibia from 19th to 21st July.

Before visiting Namibia, the Commission visited Panama, Peru and Brazil in the first phase of study tours

Acting Director Information Communication Technology (ADICT) Mr. Dylan Kasonde told the Weekly that in visiting EMBs which implement E-voting, the Commission seeks to understand the electoral legislation and details of respective voter registration processes of the countries. “The e-voting systems were customised for the electoral systems and environments in the EMBs we visited, we want to learn whether this is possible in Zambia and if so, how it would be done.

The E-voting feasibility studies are being supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Support to Programme to the Electoral Cycle in Zambia.
