The Commission Hosts MDEA

Commissioner Dr Emily Sikazwe welcomed participants to the fourth Alumni seminar of the Management of Democratic Elections in Africa that was held in Lusaka.
The Commission hosted the Fourth Alumni Chapter of The UNISA Institute for African Renaissance Studies Management of Democratic Elections in Africa (MDEA) seminar from the 21st to the 22nd of April, 2017 at Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka.
The seminar was attended by successful regional participants drawn from SADC countries, Burundi and Ghana who have completed MDEA training in Pretoria. The aim of the Fourth Alumni was to continue strengthening the MDEA Alumnus, representing the Southern African Development Communities (SADC), East African Communities (EAC), Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the West African Communities’ (ECOWAS) Member States.
Over the years Commission staff have attended the month long MDEA training programme in Pretoria. “The training includes references to the United Nations Charter, Country experiences and election case studies.
The Seminar in Lusaka was expected to accelerate the implementation of electoral reforms and to build the capacity of African elections officials to engage in activities that would promote implementation of electoral standards and principles.
The MDEA programme was conceived at the University of South Africa to promote progress towards electoral democracy in Southern Africa by focusing on strengthening electoral management bodies and other non-executive institutions of democratic governance.
