The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has been made aware of a statement attributed to the former Republican President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, in which he alleges that the Commission is conducting secret voter registration. The Commission wishes to categorically state that it takes great exception on the notion that it is engaged in the conduct of secret registration of voters in the country. The Commission wishes to state that these allegations are false, unfounded, and malicious and is a misrepresentation of the transparent process in the conduct of Continuous Registration of Voters (CRV) exercise since its inception in June, 2022.
The Commission has always adhered to the principles of transparency and inclusivity in all its electoral activities. Contrary to the allegations, the Commission commenced Continuous Registration of Voters exercise on 1st June, 2022 as part of its long-term objective in ensuring that all eligible Zambians have access to the registration centres and are registered as voters.
Currently, the Commission is conducting CRV in 30 districts, with three districts per province being covered. There are:
• Central Province: Kabwe, Mkushi and Mumbwa Districts
• Copperbelt Province: Ndola, Kitwe and Chingola Districts
• Eastern Province: Chipata, Lundazi and Petauke Districts
• Luapula Province: Mansa, Nchelenge and Samfya Districts
• Lusaka Province: Lusaka, Chongwe and Kafue Districts
• Northern Province: Kasama, Mbala and Mporokoso Districts
• North-Western Province: Solwezi, Kabompo and Mwinilunga Districts
• Muchinga Province: Chinsali, Nakonde and Mpika Districts
• Southern Province: Choma, Livingstone and Monze Districts
• Western Province: Mongu, Kaoma and Sesheke Districts
The launch of CRV activities in these districts was made public and the events were well-attended by various stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations, the media, the churches and the general public.
Furthermore, prior to the launch of CRV in any district, the Commission engages all stakeholders in ensuring that they are fully aware and informed of the objectives, timelines, and procedures involved in the exercise. In addition, the Commission regularly issues monthly statistics to update stakeholders on the progress made in the implementation and conduct of CRV. These updates are provided to ensure that all stakeholders remain informed and can monitor the process.
The Commission wishes to state that it remains committed to transparency in the electoral process and strongly encourages stakeholders to verify information before making public statements that may alarm and mislead the public unnecessarily. It is hoped that all stakeholders engage the Commission directly when they have concerns or queries regarding activities in the registration process.
