ECZ Political Parties that have participated in by-elections since January 2024 meet to review the conduct of by-elections

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) on 3rd April 2024 convened a pivotal meeting with representatives from political parties who have participated in by-elections since January 2024. The purpose of the meeting was to review and address various aspects of the conduct of by-elections, with a focus on fostering a transparent and peaceful electoral process.

The meeting also assessed the collective performance, identified areas of improvement, and reinforce commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral processes going forward.

ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro noted that meetings of this nature serve as integral checkpoints in the electoral calendar. Mr. Kasaro said the meetings also provide a platform for dialogue and constructive feedback, ensuring that the Commission continuously refine its strategies and practices in line with best practices and evolving needs.

Political parties who attended the meeting were Citizens First (CF), Leadership Movement (LM), Socialist Party (SP) and the United Party for National Development (UPND). Zambia Center for Inter-Party Dialogue also attended the meeting.
Key issues discussed during the meeting included:

1. Existence of the Political Party Liaison Committees and Conflict Management Committees: Participants deliberated on the effectiveness and operation of these committees in facilitating communication between political parties and the ECZ, as well as in resolving conflicts that may arise during electoral processes.

2. Adherence to Campaign Timetables: Political parties pledged to uphold the campaign timetable set by the ECZ to ensure equitable and orderly campaigning, thereby promoting a level playing field for all contestants.

3. Call for aspiring Candidates to participate in candidate briefings: The ECZ reiterated its call for aspiring candidates to actively participate in candidate briefings organised by the Commission. These briefings serve as vital platforms for candidates to familiarise themselves with nomination requirements, electoral regulations and procedures.

4. Low Women Participation in Politics: Participants engaged in a candid discussion on the persistent low participation of women in politics and pledged to explore strategies to address this challenge. Enhancing gender equality in political representation remains a priority for both the ECZ and political parties.

5. Enhancement of inter-party dialogue: Recognising the importance of constructive dialogue among political parties, participants emphasised the need to strengthen inter-party communication and collaboration. By fostering a culture of dialogue and cooperation, political parties can contribute to a more inclusive and democratic electoral process.

The Commission remains committed to foster dialogue and engagement among key stakeholders in the electoral process.
