ECZ SHARES PLANS TO IMPLEMENT CONTINUOUS VOTER REGISTRATION WITH PEOs and DEOs
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) today held a consultative meeting with Provincial and District Electoral Officers on the modalities of implementing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in 10 districts across the country.
The meeting was held in Lusaka at Mulungushi International Conference on 3rd March, 2022
Chief Electoral Officer Mr. Kryticous Patrick Nshindano informed the PEOs and DEOs that the exercise will commence in April 2022.
The targeted districts are Choma in Southern Province, Mongu in Western Province, Solwezi in North Western Province, Kasama in Northern Province, Kabwe in Central Province, Lusaka in Lusaka Province, Ndola in Copperbelt Province, Mansa in Luapula Province, Chipata in Eastern Province and Chinsali in Muchinga Province.
And in a presentation, ECZ Manager Elections Mr. Winner Mwanamonga said the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No.2 of 2016 in Article 46 provides for eligible citizens to register as voters and states that; ”A citizen who has attained the age of eighteen years is entitled to be registered as a voter and vote in an election by secret ballot”.
Mr. Mwanamonga further said that the Electoral Process Act No.35 of 2016, Part II provides for the registration of voters. He further said that Section 7 of the Electoral Process Act provides for continuous registration of voters, and states that the Commission shall conduct a continuous registration of voters.
The PEOs and DEOs made contributions on their preparedness to implement the planned activities and noted the need for adequate sensitization to the public on the planned activities.
The Commission’s initial engagement with stakeholders on the intention to conduct CVR was with Political Parties, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the Media.
On 2nd March, 2022 the Commission briefed the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Hakainde Hichilema on CVR and other planned activities.
