Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Commissioner Mr Ali Simwinga says that Regulation 20 of the Electoral Code of Conduct prohibits any individual or organisation from coercing or intimidating another person during campaigns, public debates or elections. Mr Simwinga said this today in Luwingu during a Traditional Leaders Meeting held at Mountain City Lodge in Luwingu.
The meeting was attended by Senior Chieftainess Chungu, Chief Katuta and Chief Chabula.
Lupososhi District Council Acting District Electoral Officer Mr. Frank Mupesha also attended the meeting.
“Chiefs are expected to support free and fair elections, allow subjects to participate freely in partisan politics, allow subjects to campaign freely for any candidate of their choice, allow political parties and candidates to campaign freely in their areas, and allow subjects to vote freely” said Commissioner Simwinga.
And speaking at the same meeting, Senior Chieftainess Chungu of the Bisa people called for peace in the conduct of elections in the district.
The Commission conducts traditional leaders meetings in districts prior to elections in order to share and exchange information on the role of traditional leaders and other stakeholders in the electoral process. The meetings provide an opportunity for learning and sharing about the role chiefs play in the electoral process.
The Commission also conducted a traditional Leaders meeting in Mangango today ahead of the Mangango Parliamentary Constituency by-election.
