Commission Applauds Police and Stakeholders for Peaceful Elections

PRESS RELEASE
(For Immediate Release)

The Electoral Commission of Zambia wishes to commend the Zambia Police Service and all political parties that participated in the Lusaka Mayoral election and Council Chairpersons’ elections in Chilanga, Chasefu, Lumezi, Chipangali, Kasenengwa, Lusangazi, and Chifunabuli as well as Local Government by-elections in North Western, Western, Luapula and Northern provinces for the peaceful manner in which the 26 July polls were conducted.

The exemplary conduct of political parties during voting in all areas where elections were held yesterday is praiseworthy and the Commission wishes to encourage political parties to continue to exercise tolerance across political party lines in any future electoral process. Furthermore, the electorate who participated in the polls displayed exemplary conduct without any acrimony towards other people.

The Commission further wishes to commend the Zambia Police Service for the outstanding policing of the elections and their quick response rate in maintaining law and order during voting at polling stations and in districts were elections were conducted. The Commission looks forward to future collaborations with the Police in order to provide a conducive environment for all stakeholders.

The Commission also notes with regret that despite this peaceful atmosphere the turnout of voters was low in various places of the country and strongly appeals to the electorate and all stakeholders to take ownership of the electoral process by exercising their democratic right to vote in future elections.
