International Observers to Monitor Polls

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has oriented two international observers on Zambia’s electoral process in preparation for the Chilanga Parliamentary by-election scheduled 5th June, 2018.

The oriention which was facilitated by Voter Education Manager, Ms Emma Mwiinga, was held at Election House on 1st June, 2018.

The orientation for the two observers from the American Embassy, namely Mr David Chibanda and Ms Cheryl Montaillo, included a presentation on the Zambian Electoral Process.

In her presentation Ms Mwiinga explained the mandate and establishment of the Commission under article 229 of the amended Constitution of Zambia and the functions of the Commission.

She also talked about the electoral cycle, requirements and qualifications of candidates, Poll day, the Count and declaration of results as well as the role of observers in an election.

The two international observers will participate in the Chilanga by-election as independent observers and are expected to come up with a report on the conduct of the Poll.

The aim of the Commission is to conduct free and fair elections that meets the aspirations of the people of Zambia. Validation by independent observers enhances the credibility of the elections.
