The Technical Committee to look at modalities of holding the 2021 General Election amidst the COVID-19 pandemic has been constituted and held its inaugural meeting today. This follows the 22nd<\/sup> February 2021 consultative meeting between the Ministry of Health and Electoral Commission of Zambia whose resolution was to form a technical committee to work on mainstreaming COVID-19 prevention mechanisms into the 2021 General Election Calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Membership has been drawn\nfrom the following institutions;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB)<\/li>
  2. Ministry of Health (MOH)<\/li>
  3. Ministry of Local Government (MLG)<\/li>
  4. Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI)<\/li>
  5. Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (OVP-DMMU)<\/li>
  6. Zambia Centre for Inter Party Dialogue (ZCID)<\/li>
  7. Civil Society Organisation<\/li>
  8. Zambia Police Service (ZP)<\/li>
  9. Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) \u2013 Zambia; and<\/li>
  10. Electoral Commission of Zambia<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The\nElectoral Commission of Zambia is leading the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In today\u2019s\nmeeting, the Electoral Commission of Zambia presented the Election Calendar\nwith associated activities while the Ministry of Health and the Zambia\nNational Public Health Institute (ZNPHI)\npresented the current country scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic. The two presentations\nform a basis for what the Committee will be focusing on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As a way forward, the meeting agreed to among other things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Formulate the Terms of Reference for the Technical Committee<\/li>
    • Ministry of Health to provide disaggregated demographic data and how COVID-19 has affected each population segment. <\/li>
    • Review the adequacy of the legal framework to ascertain levels of adherence and;<\/li>
    • Identify structures that will support the cascading of information to the rest of the stakeholders. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      The Technical Committee will be meeting on a regular  basis to speed up the formulation of guidelines and allow for timely engagement of political parties and other stakeholders<\/p>\n\n\n\n
